City and R.M of Meadow Lake receive thousands in federal Safe Restart Canada funding

Sep 12, 2020 | 9:00 AM

The provincial government is immediately distributing a portion of approximately $70.32 million in federal Safe Restart Canada Plan funding for all compliant Saskatchewan municipalities.

The City of Meadow Lake is slated to receive $318,971 and the R.M. of Meadow Lake will receive $149,195. That will support efforts to protect health and safety, prepare for potential future waves of COVID-19, and facilitate the safe re-opening of economies.

In a statement, Meadow Lake mayor Merlin Seymour expressed appreciation to the federal and provincial governments for their commitment of financial support as the community weathers the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

“Earlier this year, we were able to use the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program funds to help offset the financial hits we took from the economic closures this spring and invest in community improvements,” Mayor Seymour’s statement read. “However, we know the impacts of this pandemic will last beyond just 2020.”

Mayor Seymour added Council will have Safe Start Agreement funds available to them to help mitigate the ongoing financial impact to residents without sacrificing the services and infrastructure the community relies on.

R.M Administrator Gina Bernier told meadowlakeNOW, the funding will be used to offset costs for Plexiglas in the administrative office, to offset construction crew to various sites around the R.M. and purchasing various disinfectants and cleaners.

“This will also give us a boost to maybe hire a few more people to finish off the season because it’s been challenging,” she said. “This will help us get a little more done.”

Bernier explained aside from the pandemic, the R.M has been dealing with significant flooding. She said crews have been coming at different intervals in order to socially distance and the funding could help boost productivity.

This federal funding was matched by $150 million announced previously from the Government of Saskatchewan through the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program.
