The coronavirus pandemic will ensure upcoming holidays look a little different for everyone this year, but one woman in Meadow Lake hopes to provide a sense of comfort for seniors this Thanksgiving.

Priscilla Miller who owns Devour Grill and Bar located at the Meadow Lake Golf Club will provide a free meal for seniors in the area.

“I just realized that there’s probably a lot of people that won’t be able to come home to their parents or grandparents because of the COVID pandemic and I just wanted to make sure they get a nice meal for Thanksgiving because everybody looks forward to that,” Miller told meadowlakeNOW.

The meal will include turkey, stuffing and potatoes among other fixings. The only requirement for recipients is that they are a senior and register in advance. Miller said sign-up sheets have been dropped off at several of the senior homes in Meadow Lake and Flying Dust area and she is prepared to deliver up to 100 meals on Oct. 12 with the help of staff, family and friends.

“I know myself personally, if it was just me and my husband home and my kids weren’t around it would be hard to cook a turkey for just one or two people, so it’s open to all seniors regardless of their income,” she said.

Miller’s grand gesture falls in line with the Government of Saskatchewan’s safety guidelines for having a safe Thanksgiving. Among the recommendations is to considering having individual portions of a Thanksgiving meal delivered from a restaurant or caterer. Potlucks are discouraged and there should be no shared platters of food or buffet service. All served food should be plated by a single person and vulnerable individuals, such as seniors and those with underlying health conditions, should receive their food first to minimize cross-contamination.

Any seniors wanting to sign up to receive a Thanksgiving supper from Miller’s restaurant can contact Devour Grill and Bar at 306-236-6545. The deadline is Oct. 6.

Miller is covering the cost of the meals out of her own pocket.

“It’s just the way I am raised,” she said. “I grew up in a Catholic home, so I know I will be rewarded in the end.”
