Merlin Seymour acclaimed as mayor in Meadow Lake

When Meadow Lake city council meets for the first time after next months election, a familiar face will be in the mayor’s chair.

Merlin Seymour was acclaimed to the position following the nomination deadline Wednesday afternoon. Seymour, who spent six years serving as a city councillor before winning a byelection for mayor last September, said he’s looking forward to giving back to the community.

“I’m passionate about Meadow Lake,” he said. “I was born and raised here and I just like to be involved in the happenings and going-ons in the city and if I can do my part to help out somehow to the community in general, I’d like to do that as long as I can.”

Among the projects he looks forward to continuing is the new long-term care facility that is currently being constructed. Seymour also said the current council just had its first preliminary budget meeting to discuss the upcoming wants and needs for 2021.

“I realize there is an election but it’s a process we take very seriously and we want to have our budget passed as long as we are able to before the new years starts. That’s one thing previous mayor Vidal was adamant about – having a budget in place prior to spending taxpayers dollars, so that’s one thing I want to carry forward,” Seymour said.

He also encouraged citizens to get out and vote. He suggested a 50 per cent voter turnout would be ‘shooting for the stars’ but was something that would be awesome to see. Meadow Lake voter turnout has historically hovered around 20 per cent.

“Voting is a privilege and a right. You have the option of voicing your opinion so please go out and vote whether that be on Nov. 9 or through the advanced polls listed on our city website or mail-in ballots which is new this year because of the COVID pandemic.”

A total of 11 people are vying for six council seats according to Meadow Lake returning officer Jessica Walters. Four incumbents filed nomination papers including Ron Dishko, Conrad Read, Tom Harrison and Richard Levesque. New candidates include Felicia Adams, Amber Ambroziak, Shawn Brander, Clay DeBray, Kassidy Dunsing, Sébastien Dupuis and Mauri Young.

“New faces could bring fresh ideas. Not saying we’re stagnant in any way but everyone has their own option and sights on what Meadow Lake could look like down the road – whether that’s through infrastructure or building — anything that comes to the table, if you have different ideas it could happen.”

The first advanced poll is scheduled to be held Oct. 29 at city hall.

The municipal election is set for Nov. 9.
