The Crime Severity Index (CSI) figures for 2019 are now available on Statistics Canada and Meadow Lake sits at 10 on the list of highest scoring municipalities in the country.

In 2019, Meadow Lake had a score of 150.73 on the CSI, which includes all Criminal Code violations, such as traffic, drug violations and all Federal Statutes. This adds up to a roughly 13 per cent increase in crime in the area in 2019, following a 10.5 per cent reduction in 2018. It’s the highest CSI score in the city since 2016.

The percentages of violent and non-violent crime both saw increases after decreases in 2018. Following two years of reduction amount to roughly 36 per cent, Meadow Lake spiked 36.69 per cent in violent crime. The city has seen far more drastic numbers in the past, including a 230 per cent rise in violent crime in 2016, versus a 68.5 per cent drop in 2013.

The other statistic released is the weighted clearance rate, which measures the percentage of police reported criminal incidents that are cleared by charge, or cleared by “other” (such as the accused being deceased) then weighted by crime severity. Meadow Lake scored 50.95, which is a 4.38 per cent increase from 2018.
