Mother killed, and three children in hospital after train and car collide in Rosthern

Rosthern and District Ambulance confirmed a 30-year-old woman is dead, and her three young children are in hospital, following a tragic crash in the community Sunday morning.

Around 10 a.m., the car the woman was driving collided with a train on Highway 312.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service told paNOW the children range in age from eight to 12 years old; and a nine-year-old girl was transported by Stars Air Ambulance to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

According to a release from RCMP, the initial investigation by police revealed a car carrying four occupants was travelling east on Highway 312 when it was struck while crossing over the train tracks. The train was travelling south.

All three girls were all in the back seat of the car and transported to hospital with what were reported to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Further investigation by the Rosthern RCMP determined the rail crossing equipment, including the lights and the bell, appeared operational while police officers were on scene. The rail line is privately owned.

The police investigation is ongoing and there have been no details provided with respect to where the family is from.
