Meadow Lake Chamber set for candidate forum

Nov 3, 2020 | 4:25 PM

Meadow Lake residents may not have the opportunity to hear from all municipal council candidates in person, but they will still get to hear from them and ask questions prior to the election on Monday.

The Meadow Lake Chamber of Commerce is set to host an all candidates forum this evening at 7 p.m., with the 11 nominees for city council answering questions broadcast to an online audience. Each candidate will have opportunity to speak to why they are running for a seat on council, getting three to five questions, depending on the length of the answers. The forum will be recorded and posted onto Facebook and the Chamber website afterwards.

Trevor Dignean, chamber administrator, said the questions were provided in advance.

“We’ve got eight questions that we already sent out already,” he said.

Dignean said they would have loved to have done a traditional all candidates forum with residents there in person asking the questions, but it simply wasn’t possible with current COVID-19 precautions.

“Makes it a little bit more interactive if you’re live,” he said. “Hopefully this goes well. We’ll see how it takes off.”

Eleven candidates are vying for a spot at city hall. These include Lakeview Elementary School teacher Felicia Adams, Aurora Cinemas manager Amber Ambroziak, Meadow Lake Properties employee Sebastien Dupuis, Flying Dust arena manager Clay Debray, Mauri Young of Ron’s Plumbing and Heating, Eatery on Main owner Kassidy Dunsing and North West College instructor Shawn Brander. The incumbent councillors running for re-election are Co-op petroleum division manager Ron Dishko, Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure Operations Manager Conrad Read and retiree’s Richard Levesque and Tom Harrison.

Despite having the forum virtually and most residents possibly having a strong leaning, Dignean said it was still important to bring this to members of the community less familiar with the names involved. There are still many potential voters who are new to the community that have not made a connection with some, or many, of the council hopefuls.

“This is an opportunity for someone who’s either undecided or doesn’t know [the candidates] to get a perspective of what they stand for and what their platform is going to be,” he said.

To tune in at 7 p.m., rather than wait for the recording to be posted to the Chamber’s website afterwards, Dignean said all interested residents can email him at mlchamberofcommerce@sasktel.net in order to receive a virtual invite link.
