Meadow Lake council swearing-in set for Monday

Nov 16, 2020 | 1:16 PM

As budget season looms, the City of Meadow Lake is set to begin pivotal discussions on how to proceed this winter with a new council.

A swearing-in ceremony will take place at City Hall this evening for newly elected councillors Clay DeBray and Mauri Young, who join incumbents Conrad Read, Richard Levesque, Tom Harrison, Ron Dishko and Mayor Merlin Seymour in guiding local policy for the next four years.

DeBray gets to add another profession to his resume, having spent time as an educator, counsellor and police force member. Currently holding leadership positions with Pine Ridge Ford Place Arena and Snipe and Celly Pro Shop, the Meadow Lake Chamber of Commerce and Meadow Lake Minor Hockey, DeBray received 468 votes, second amongst all council candidates. He told meadowlakeNOW he’s really excited to get onto the team for city council.

“I’m pretty humbled by the support I received,” DeBray said. “It makes want to work even harder for the people of Meadow Lake.”

In addition to the oaths of office, the new councillors will have some time for orientation and introductions with staff. DeBray said his main focus in starting off his new role is getting caught up with where the city was heading into the election.

“Catching up to the four incumbents and using them for advice, so I can be a big part of the team,” he said.

In joining council, DeBray hopes to bring a little diversity to the table.

“Having new initiatives and new ideas never hurts,” he said. “Hopefully, I can bring those forth to council and we work as a team for the better of our city.”

And until the deliberations on budget work begin, Debray said he wants to thank all of his supporters and everyone who ran this election.

“It’s a big area to put your name on a ballot, and it just proves there’s lots of great people in ML who want to do a public service for our city,” he said.

“Kudos to everyone that ran and hopefully everybody runs again in the future.”

The ceremony gets underway at 5:30 p.m. meadowlakeNOW did not receive a reply from Coun. Mauri Young at the time of publication.
