Council candidate Clay DeBray – a man of many hats

Oct 15, 2020 | 2:57 PM

If you live in the Meadow Lake area, chances are you’ve either met or heard of Clay DeBray.

The city council candidate moved to Meadow Lake five years ago to raise his family. In the past, he has spent time as an educator, an inner-city youth counsellor and a special constable or the police force.

“But what I currently do is I manage the Pine Ridge Ford Place Arena and Snipe and Celly Pro Shop,” Debray said. “I also sit as a board member on the Meadow Lake Chamber of Commerce and I am the director of hockey development for Meadow Lake Minor Hockey. So, I wear quite a few hats here in the community.”

He is also managing the build of a new outdoor arena on the Flying Dust First Nation where he has worked in the recreation department. It’s that background in sport and recreation field that DeBray thinks will bring value to council chambers.

“Being the manager of the Saskatchewan First Nations Summer Games that we just hosted here in Flying Dust…having events like that within our community brings that economic structure to the whole community,” he said. “Just by bringing in the summer games, we brought in over a million dollars to our local businesses within Meadow Lake. So, those types of things – always improving on infrastructure but also bringing in events of that magnitude where we can have more people visiting our community so we can develop in a positive way.”

DeBray said he wants to bring new initiatives and new ideas to the city, while also bringing a little diversity to the table.

“The people that are asking me to put my name forward – its because of being a good listener to their issues and concerns. And it’s usually the same thing – infrastructure. The biggest thing for me since I am raising a family here is, I make Meadow Lake home and I want to make sure the city is the best that it can be.”

DeBray said his only election campaign promise is to work hard for the people and be a voice for those who need their voices heard.

The municipal election is set for Nov. 9.
