Karla Hansen appointed to Meadow Lake parks and recreation board; three new positions added

The City of Meadow Lake has appointed Karla Hansen as a city representative on the Parks and Recreation Board, filling the board’s fourth and final vacancy.

Hansen said she is eager to join the board and help make a difference in the community’s programming, mentioning the positive effects regular activity can have on physical and mental health.

“I’m excited to be a part of it, be a part of the community and see what we can do to help bring more opportunities for recreation and help increase our physical activity in the community,” Hansen said. “I think it’s very important for mental health for everyone. Not just a young child, but also our active seniors. It’s important that they get out and stay active in the community as well.”

Hansen is known for her role as a board member for the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Association as well as her presence in other community events. Mayor Merlin Seymour and Parks and Recreation Manager Regan Beck both stated the addition of Hansen will bring an added value to the program.

“We’re happy to have another person on our board. Karla is very active in the community whether as a board member for Meadow Lake Minor Hockey or as a parent with two young children in town who are really active in sports. We’re happy to fill that role and we think Karla will be a nice fit for us.”

The announcement comes at the same time council agreed to add three new job positions to the recreation program. The board stated it hopes to offer more programming throughout the summer, and that three new positions would be required for operation. Once the current collective agreement enters negotiations, the three new positions are expected to be added to the next agreement with CUPE.

Mayor Seymour mentioned while the recreation department has been limited in what programs they have been able to offer, Beck has continued to make additions like flag football while ensuring new activities abide by social distancing recommendations.

Beck stated he would like to begin running day camps throughout the summer if the public health guidelines allow for it.

“Each day would have different agendas, there would be snack time and lunch time and it would be based around the aquatic centre so they would have time in the pool and the spray park. There will be a lot of different opportunities to keep kids busy during the course of the summer that are still here.”

He added he knows there is a demand to get back to these activities, referencing his personal experience as a father of four children. He reiterated the board will look to maintain and build on top of its current programming.

“As a parent of four children, I’m really excited to get them out there and doing stuff, and that’s just on the youth side of things. I think adults are very excited to get out there and do stuff as well. If nothing else, to socialize and feel a little bit more normalcy than we’re used to these days.”

The current public health safety measures are expected to remain in place until at least February 19. Any future recreation programming will be on hold until new safety measures are announced.
