Meadow Lake City Council declines 2021 property tax increase

Mar 16, 2021 | 11:22 AM

Meadow Lake City Council has agreed to decline increasing property taxes for 2021.

The decision was originally agreed to back in December when council approved the 2021 budget, but has been confirmed once again after a review. While the city has opted against any increases, this year is a re-evaluation year, meaning some residents could still see changes to their property taxes pending the review’s results.

Mayor Merlin Seymour stated council chose not to make tax changes due to the economic impact of COVID-19.

“COVID was a tough year on everyone, and we felt that we were able to keep our taxes without an increase. We want to be as fair as we can with the taxpayers. You don’t kick a hurt dog when it’s down. Times are tough right now, so we’re trying our best to lessen the load.”

City documents state the province has changed the percentage of value for commercial properties, meaning properties that were previously taxed at 100 per cent will be reduced and taxed at 85 per cent. According to the report, if nothing but the percentage of value changes with the tax policy, commercial taxes will decrease while residential taxes will increase.

Council stated it would like to continue discussing the tax policy as soon as possible as administration is aware they will be receiving assessment information later than usual. If all goes according to plan, tax notices will be mailed out by May 25 after the final reading of the property tax bylaws has been completed.

The property tax bylaws will be reviewed again once the city reaches the next reassessment year.
