Two Kilns destroyed in NorSask mill fire; no reported injuries

Mar 29, 2021 | 5:36 PM

A fire at the NorSask Forest Productions mill on Saturday morning has resulted in the loss of two lumber-drying kilns.

On March 27, the Meadow Lake Fire Department was alerted to a blaze at the mill nearly a half hour before noon. When the fire department arrived, they worked with the Loon Lake and Glaslyn Fire Departments to extinguish the fire. Crews continued to work on controlling and monitoring the area for several hours, finally wrapping up efforts at approximately 7 p.m. that night. Ensuing clean up efforts continued at the facility through the night until Sunday morning.

Meadow Lake Fire Chief Neil Marsh mentioned the fire crews were dispatched to another call on the morning of the incident, meaning crews and resources were occupied for a majority of the day.

“It was a very long day. We had a structure fire that same morning, so our firefighters were busy from 6:30 in the morning straight through until 10 at night. At the end of a day like that, everyone is pretty tired, but we were back in service and everything was ready to go for the next call. Everyone is in good shape.”

There were no reported injuries in the incident and the cost of damages has yet to be determined.

NorSask Forest Productions is expected to be fully operational at some point next week.
