Meadow Lake man wins SCMA for On Air Personality of the Year

A local broadcaster has been recognized at this year’s Saskatchewan Country Music Awards (SCMA) for On Air Personality of the Year.

This is the fourth time for 102.3 CJNS Radio Host and Broadcaster Matt Ryan has claimed the award in his 13-year career. Despite taking home the hardware again at this year’s virtual awards show, Ryan shared the achievement hasn’t lost its lustre.

“It’s really special and it means everything,” Ryan said. “It doesn’t lose its incredible honour. I mean, I’ve been in the business now for almost 13 years, and I love every day. Getting any kind of recognition from peers and my good friends across Saskatchewan is very humbling and it’s an honor.”

One of the many aspects that can be attributed to Ryan’s success is his dedication to highlighting community news and local artists. Ryan co-hosts a show with fellow broadcasters Christy Beggs and Cal Gratton called Saskatchewan Country Close Up where they chat with local Saskatchewan artists, share their stories, talk about their new music and what is going on in their lives.

Ryan believes local radio can have a significant effect on the community and its local talent, which is why he says he makes a point of shining the spotlight on them and notable events in the community.

“Local radio has an incredible impact on the community, and, with everything that is going on the last year or so, it has been very difficult for so many. I absolutely love broadcasting, bringing updates and local stories, promoting local talent, great Saskatchewan artists here across our province. There’s so much great talent here in Saskatchewan that I do my best to try to do whatever I can to help promote the local talent here in the province, and there are all kinds of great events going on in the community.”

With the awards show now in the rear-view mirror, Ryan expressed his appreciation for the recognition and said he plans to continue his passion in delivering exceptional local content to his community.

“I’m so appreciative of all who have taken time for interviews over the many years, so I just want to say a big thank you to all the artists, and I very much appreciate it. Thank you very much.”
