The long-term care facility being erected in Meadow Lake has finally been named by the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Government of Saskatchewan. The building will be known as the NorthWest Community Lodge.

In a press release, the Government of Saskatchewan stated the name accurately reflects the geographical area the building represents, adding the centre provides improved access and service to residents in the region.

Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison said the new addition will provide residents with opportunities in the future.

“The next step in this process is an exciting one for our community and those connected to the building. This building will provide our community with a wonderful facility, while creating an exciting future for the NorthWest Community Lodge and Meadow Lake,” Harrison stated.

The release stated by replacing the Northland Pioneer Lodge that has been in service since 1955, local seniors will reside in a safer, more modern facility that meets and exceeds living standards and safety codes. The facility boasts a 72-bed capacity, a 19-bed increase from the facility that is being replaced.

NorthWest Community Lodge Association president Alannah Farr stated she is pleased with the new name and the inclusiveness the facility will provide to residents in the area.

“We are so pleased the name will reflect the fact that this will be home to people from various communities in this area. We also believe it is very important the cultural diversity of the area will be acknowledged with the inclusion of a Spiritual Room that will be of benefit to the many surrounding communities near Meadow Lake,” Farr stated.

The NorthWest Community Lodge is expected to open some time in the fall. The Government of Saskatchewan stated there are plans to build new long-term care facilities in Grenfell, La Ronge, Watson, Estevan and Regina as well.
