Meadow Lake White Sox senior baseball returns home for the summer

Jun 14, 2021 | 3:41 PM

After more than a year of lockdowns, distancing and very little activity, bats are cracking and baseballs are flying around in Lions Park for the Meadow Lake White Sox once again.

On Sunday, the team played their home opener against the Kindersley Stallions. While the Sox put forth an effort to secure their first home win of the season, they fell short to the Stallions, dropping the contest in an 11-3 defeat.

Despite the loss, Sox manager Craig Weran said getting back into home action was a pleasant relief after dealing with all of the complications caused by the public health crisis.

“We had a shortened season last year, a late start this year and a bit of uncertainty earlier in the year. It’s just nice being back on the diamond again, being able to play and have a few fans come out and support us was good.”

Weran shared the Sox had allowed the Stallions to build a small lead in the early innings with the score being 3-0 in favour of the Stallions after three innings. From there, the scoring would pile on with the Stallions putting another four runs on the board in the fourth inning. The Sox would answer with a few runs of their own, but the lead would prove too much to overcome.

After starting their season with two games on the road, the Sox stand with a record of 1–2 heading into their fourth game of the season. The Sox opened up the season with a tough 8–1 loss to the Unity Junior Cardinals, but were able to respond with a 5–4 victory over the Mervin Flyers.

With the first home game now in the books, there are now five home games left on the Sox’s schedule this year. The Sox next home game is set to take place on Tuesday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. against the St. Walburg Reds in Lions Park before heading back on the road to face off against the North Battleford Beavers on Thursday.

Waren would like to thank the fans that came out to show their support.

“It was nice having them and being able to be on the diamond again, compete and play the game we all enjoy. Thanks to the grounds crew for doing what they can to keep our diamonds in shape.”
