Chuckwagon drivers set to ride for Meadow Lake minor hockey

Jun 17, 2021 | 2:08 PM

As the weekend approaches, chuckwagon riders are preparing to come together to raise money for local minor hockey.

On June 19-20, Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) and World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) drivers are expected to gather at the Meadow Lake Stampede Grounds for a chuckwagon fun run. The event will be open to the public, and while there is no charge for attending, donations to the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Association are encouraged.

The money is intended to help the organization in its recovery from the recent fire that destroyed Meadow Lake & District Arena.

Chuckwagon driver DJ King shared the event on Facebook earlier in the week. In an interview with meadowlakeNOW, he mentioned the former arena was a crucial part of his life and many youth and residents in the community. He added the arena was considered a second home by many.

“We have an opportunity to raise some money, and a lot of us drivers that are driving played minor hockey in Meadow Lake,” King said.

“I know what it meant to our community, so it’s just a way for us to give back. Everyone that grew up in this area knows what that arena meant, not only for hockey, but so many things.”

The event is expected to begin at 3 p.m. on both days, running for about an hour and a half. Attendance will be managed using the same drive-in style approach that was used in previous events. There will be some grandstands set up, but there will only be enough room to accommodate the current maximum size for outdoor gatherings, 150 people.

King shared he is looking forward to providing the community with great entertainment over the weekend and supporting the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Association with some financial relief.

“It’ll be a good show. Hopefully, we can put on a great show and make some money for minor hockey.”
