Disc Golf advocate working to increase sport popularity in Meadow Lake

Jul 7, 2021 | 5:27 PM

A man in Meadow Lake is working to bring a sport with increasing popularity into the community.

Disc Golf is a simplified version of the traditional game of the same name. Rather than using golf clubs and balls, this version only requires people with arms, a Frisbee-like disc and a disc golf course.

Knowing that Meadow Lake currently has a disc golf course set up in Lions’ Park, Jason Worobec said he saw an opportunity to form a disc golf community in the area and create a league for residents to enjoy.

“I noticed there was a course here, but it didn’t seem like anyone was really using it at all. I’ve played for a number of years, so I thought I would start up a weekly thing and I’ve kind of been doing that the last couple summers,” Worobec shared. “The sport has kind of taken off within the last year. So, I figured I’d take advantage of that, and try to make more people aware of what this sport is and what it’s all about.”

Worobec explained he is currently hosting some free disc golf activities to help educate people how to play the game, and create interest in the community.

He hosts a weekly gathering at 6:30 on Thursday evening at Lions’ Park that is open to anyone who would like to give the sport a try, he said. While he supplies those in attendance with the discs for the evening, he said Snipe and Celly at the Flying Dust arena has started adding disc golf supplies to their inventory if people would like to purchase their own equipment.

On Saturday, the Northwest Disc Golf Trilogy Challenge is set to take place with participants travelling from all over the province for the event. Players can register for $60, and the current number of entrants is said to be sitting at 47 players. A player’s pack is included with registry that consists of three discs, a towel and a mini disk. The contest will consist of two rounds of 18 holes. The lowest score at the end of the day will be declared the winner.

Later that evening, Worobec will be hosting a glow-in-the-dark disc golf event that will be open to the community at 10 p.m. He stated he will have discs for newcomers to borrow throughout the event. Baskets will be lit up using LED lights. The event and gear rentals will be free of charge.

Worobec feels the sport can bring an exciting dynamic to the community, citing its simplicity and inclusiveness as some of the sport’s potential in the community.

“A big part of the reason why I’m putting so much time and energy into this sport is that I see a lot of potential in what it has to offer to the community. This is a sport that I think is accessible for many people to be able to play,” Worobec said.

“It doesn’t require a large investment upfront to be able to play. This beginner set can cost you $40–$50. Once you have that, you’re good to go. Most of the courses in Saskatchewan and all over the world are generally free to play because they’re set up in public park areas. For those reasons, I think this is just a very accessible sport for people to get into, and I encourage anyone and everyone to try it out and just enjoy playing.”

Before the sport can get up and running to Worobec’s vision, he stated the development of the sport in the community requires support from sponsors to upgrade the existing disc golf structures.

He said funding is needed to upgrade the current disc targets and tee pads and install a course map sign. If sponsors are acquired, they will receive recognition on the new professional-grade structures placed throughout the renovated nine-hole course and on social media.

Worobec believes these upgrades are necessary to create a more enjoyable experience that will fulfill the needs of new and returning players.

Residents and businesses that would like to contribute to the course’s renovation or inquire about disc golf in the community can contact Jason Worobec by email at Jason.worobec@gmail.com or phone at (306) 917-7778.
