Flying Dust First Nation’s Trisha Fulton to compete in 2021 Miss Canada Globe pageant

A young woman from Flying Dust First Nation is preparing for a beauty showcase with the chance to capture the gaze of audience members later this year.

Trisha Fulton has received confirmation that she has been accepted to participate in this year’s Miss Canada Globe contest. Fulton shared she had an interest in pageants ever since she was a young child. She said she used to dream about having the opportunity to walk the stage one day. With this announcement, Fulton is one step closer to turning that childhood dream into a reality.

Fulton explained she is receiving guidance ahead of this year’s performance. Her mentor, Keely Wesley, was a participant in last year’s Miss Canada Globe contest. Fulton reached out to Wesley after noticing she was taking on apprentices. Shortly after, Fulton was contacted by Miss Canada Globe Productions for an interview that would help them decide whether she would be in this year’s contest.

Fulton said she hopes to inspire younger generations to pursue their dreams and passions, mentioning she used to ask her mother if she could get to this point, adding her mom would reassure her that she would if she worked at it.

“As a kid, I was bullied a lot, and I didn’t really fit in. I suffered from depression, and this helped me,” Fulton shared. “I want to inspire people, and let them know that there’s always a way out of living in a tough environment, or any situation that you’re in. I grew up being surrounded by a lot of tough things, but I never let it affect me, and I never let it stop me from doing things that I’m passionate about.”

The Miss Canada Globe competition is the country’s preliminary contest that determines who will be named Miss Canada Globe. The winner will have the opportunity to represent Canada at the international Miss Globe pageant.

The contest also provides contestants with an opportunity to highlight issues the contestants feel deserve more public support. Fulton wants to use the moment to garner support for suicide prevention and mental health resources within First Nations communities, while raising awareness to significant issues, including missing and murdered Indigenous women and the damage caused by the residential school system.

“I lost one of my cousins to suicide, and it really affected my family. I know what it’s like to go through something like that, and to feel like that’s the only way out, but it’s not. I want to go out there and tell kids that there’s always another way, and that they can literally pursue anything that they put their mind to.”

“My mom and my grandma, they’re survivors of residential schools. I’ve heard the stories and know how bad it was. I feel like not enough people are educated enough on the fact that a lot of people think this is from hundreds of years ago. It wasn’t even that long ago. The last school closed in 1996, and generational trauma is real. I want people to understand that.”

Fulton hopes participating in this contest will lead to opportunities as a public speaker so she can continue to address social issues on a larger scale, inspire younger generations to pursue grand opportunities and motivate them to strive for a better quality of life.

Fulton is currently fundraising to cover the costs associated with the competition, including airfare, attire and more. Anyone who would like to offer a financial contribution to Fulton’s campaign can send transfers to trishafulton77@gmail.com. To offer support and follow her journey, Fulton will be posting updates to social media on Facebook and Instagram (@trishafulton).

The Miss Canada Globe pageant is expected to take place in September. The event will have updates posted on the Miss Canada Globe website, and there will be videos uploaded to the Miss Canada Globe YouTube page.
