Meadow Lake organizations receive nearly $3,000 in charitable gaming grants

The most recent round of grants from the Government of Saskatchewan has seen nearly $4,000 go toward Meadow Lake organizations.

Earlier this week, the provincial government announced more than $2.1 million would be shared with over 700 organizations across the province. Three organizations in Meadow Lake; the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation (MLHF), the NorthWest Community Lodge Association and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 76, were designated as the recipients of this recent financial donation.

The grants are awarded on a quarterly basis, with the funding coming from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) through licensed charitable gaming activities, including bingo, raffles and other events.

The Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation received a little under $1,200, the NorthWest Community Lodge Association was provided nearly $2,000 and the Legion was awarded just over $600.

Connie Marsh, MLHF Treasurer, explained the financial boost comes as part of the 50/50 raffle and other fundraising events the foundation has organized throughout the year. She also mentioned the money will be used to help the organization reach their medical equipment fundraising goal.

“Because we’re a charitable organization, we’re eligible to receive a grant equal to 25 per cent of the net revenue that we raise each time we have a raffle or something similar,” Marsh explained. “Any amount we receive from the SLGA grant goes towards our goal that we have for purchasing hospital equipment each year.”

A display of these purchases dating back to 2008 can be found on the MLHF website.

Jim Reiter, Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, said the funding is designed to help organizations remain operational by covering some of the associated costs.

“These most recent charitable gaming grants will assist in those efforts and continue to help minor sports programs, local service clubs, educational endeavours and many other great services.”
