Three wildfires of note as 128 blazes burn across the province

Saskatchewan has 128 active fires, 16 of which are not contained, 11 are contained, and 83 are being assessed.

According to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s (SPSA) most updated report, there were three main wildfires of note: north of Hudson Bay, north of Smeaton and north of Grandmother’s Bay.

The fire north of Hudson Bay shows the southeast corner is displaying very active fire behaviour with crews and equipment trying to secure the line. Dozer operations are supporting aerial ignition efforts. Helicopters are supporting crews and dozers building fire guards. That fire was measured at 30,482 hectares.

Meanwhile crews are also continuing to work on the southwest and southeast lines of the fire north of Smeaton with dozers. The blaze was measured at 23,319 hectares.

And the 4,237 hectare fire north of Grandmother’s Bay has crews continuing to hold the fire by the Grandmother’s Bay access road.

A special air quality notice is in effect across many parts of the wider region, not just because of north-central Saskatchewan wildfires but because of smoke heading east from fires burning in BC.
