Saskatchewan Angus Tours set to make first-ever Meadow Lake appearance on Aug. 12

Aug 11, 2021 | 3:15 PM

An annual event designed to promote local Angus breeders is set to take place in Meadow Lake for the first time ever after making appearances in other areas across the province over the past several years.

The Saskatchewan Angus Tours is making its stop in Meadow Lake on Thursday, August 12 before shipping out to Spiritwood on the following Friday. Red and Black Angus breeders from across the province will set up shop for two all-day events that feature two meals and drinks while providing cattle producers with the opportunity to showcase their livestock.

Organizer/Angus Breeder Lacey Brooks stated these tours provide farmers with a rare opportunity to visit markets across the province and showcase their herd. She added most typical events only allow farmers to feature a few bulls or heifers, whereas this tour permits breeders to display a much larger selection. This means the event has an overwhelmingly positive impact on the breeders marketing and subsequent sales.

“Usually there’s between 100-200 people that attend the tours, so it’s an opportunity to get that many people to see your cows. Usually you just take a few to a sale and people see them, but it’s not very often that people get to see the majority of your herd,” Brooks said.

“One of the main things is networking and meeting other breeders around the province that they usually wouldn’t meet. So, when you see sales come up in the spring or different events going on, you kind of recognize people around the province, especially in the Meadow Lake area and areas that are a bit more remote. People aren’t usually driving through to stop and look at things, so just having that number of people come look at your cows, and then later being able to have the confidence to buy a bull, heifer or something like that.”

A local breeder reinforced this statement, sharing his own experience with the tour and how it has affected his business. Jimmy Wright, a fourth-generation Angus breeder residing in Meadow Lake, explained a significant task in his career as a breeder that focuses on the genetics of the cows. Tours, like the one set to take place on Thursday, assist with a producer’s ability to stay on top of the latest in genetics through increasing their network with other figures in the industry.

“Mostly everybody that’s on the tour, we sell purebred females and in various purebred consignment sales in the fall, as well as privately,” Wright shared. “I know for ourselves, we market quite a few cattle in genetics, whether it being embryos or semen through various cattle shows. We show some cattle to promote our breeding program, promote our genetics, and we spend quite a bit of time doing that, but it’s also been something that’s allowed us to grow our customer base.”

The tour will take place between 9 a.m. and 7p.m., and the price of admission for the event is set at $30 per person for a single day, or $50 for both days. Anyone who would like to register for the event or gather more information can contact Lacey Brooks by phone at 306-240-4509.
