Meadow Lake’s Dawson Gerwing will trade in his black and silver Stars jersey for green and white ‘Team Sask’ threads next month, as the 15-year-old has been selected to Team Saskatchewan’s Male U16 program for the 2021 WHL Cup.

This year’s event will take place in Red Deer, Alta. from Oct. 20–24 and will featuring some of the top young talent from across western and central Canada. Saskatchewan will battle it out with the likes of Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba for U16 supremacy.

Just under 170 hockey players from across Saskatchewan attended the initial U16 camp earlier this summer in Lumsden from July 30–Aug. 1, with the top 30 invited back to the next —held last week in Regina and Wilcox — to determine the final 20-man roster.

Gerwing said he received the call from his dad this week, notifying him of making the team, on his way to hockey practice with the Battlefords Triple-A Stars.

“I had just got back from school and was heading to hockey practice when my dad called me and told me, so that was pretty exciting,” Gerwing said. “I’m really looking forward to just playing against the best players from all the provinces, and seeing some guys I’ve never seen before, and just soaking up the experience.”

A big body for his age, at already 6-2, 190 lb, Gerwing said he prides himself on playing a power-forward game, something that should prove valuable in whatever role is required of him next month.

“I’m a big forward, and I would say I play a pretty physical game down low and on the walls. I work hard and like to compete and kind of contribute at all two hundred feet of the ice,” he said.

Prior to scoring a pair of points with the NorthWest U15 Double-A Stars in a hockey season limited to just two games last year, Gerwing put up 12 goals and 27 points in 31 games with the team while adding 42 penalty minutes in 2019-2020.

Head coach of the Triple-A Stars, Dale Grayston said it’s great to see Gerwing get recognized with a spot on the Team Sask roster, knowing first hand not only his talent, but the hard work that lays the foundation for his game.

“Dawson’s got a lot of raw potential and he’s a big, strong kid, so when you combine that with his offensive skill set and a great work ethic to go along with it, it’s special,” Grayston said. “Making Team Sask is a big accomplishment for any young guy in our province, and certainly we hope to see him have some good success there.”

The Team Sask U16 roster is comprised of 2006-born athletes, eligible for the upcoming WHL Prospect Draft Dec. 9. For a full list of those selected, click here.
