CALL OF DUTY

La Ronge paramedic honoured for bravery, heroism

Sep 22, 2021 | 6:00 PM

A local first responder was recently honoured for going above and beyond the call of duty while responding to a collision nearly two years ago.

Cameron Harrison is a paramedic with La Ronge Fire Services and has been with the community for a total of nine years.

Harrison was recently given the Star of Life Award, an honour created by the Paramedic Services Chiefs of Saskatchewan (PSCS).

“It’s an award for paramedics who go above and beyond the call of duty with acts of heroics, bravery and service,” said Harrison.

“It’s a great honour to receive the award along with the team that I was out there on the incident with. It’s a very prestigious award handed out to very few paramedics.”

The incident Harrison refers to happened on Oct. 25, 2019, in the Village of Beauval, north of Meadow Lake.

At that time, a paramedic team from Meadow Lake was travelling to Beauval to transport a patient. On the way, they were involved in a head-on collision.

Harrison was with the Beauval EMS team that was one of the first crews to arrive at the scene of the collision.

Sadly several people died in that crash including Meadow Lake Road Ambulance Paramedic Leigh Schroeder.

A release written at the time of the crash detailed the heroism of the first responders but the grave challenges they faced in answering this specific call.

“The mental strength and fortitude the crews from Meadow Lake and Ile-a-la-Crosse had to have was astounding as they each responded to the crash site.”

“The feeling of helplessness, frustration, and despair during that drive to the scene is something that will likely be with them for a lifetime. From the time the tone sounded, as each of the paramedics learned of the collision, to the paramedics arriving on scene, they each excelled as professionals, as leaders, as heroes.”

Two other members of the Beauval EMS team were recognized alongside Harrison, as well as paramedics from Meadow Lake, Ile-de-laCrosse, and the Medavie Communications Team were also given the Star of Life Award.

While Harrison said it was a great feeling to receive the honour, he added it was also bittersweet knowing the constant work and stress he and other first responders go through on a daily basis.

“Paramedics quite often go above and beyond the call of duty. Most often, the public doesn’t know what we actually do day-to-day and the everlasting effects on these calls.”

“All of the teams that go out there, paramedics, fire and police we all work together through critical events. Respect goes out to them as much as it does to me.”

This year’s ceremony was to be held in 2020 but was postponed because of the pandemic.
