Saskatchewan breaks record for daily COVID count; 601 cases reported

The province has broken its record for the most daily cases of COVID-19 reported, as 601 new cases were confirmed Thursday.

The previous record was 552 cases recorded last Sunday.

The province also reported 10 additional deaths from the virus bringing the total to 695 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Active cases rose to 4,669 and 307 people are in hospital with COVID-19, 72 people are in intensive care.

The latest data from the Government of Saskatchewan shows that of the 601 new cases, 520 are in those who are not vaccinated. That includes 127 under the age of 11 who are not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Of the 601 new cases, 172 are in Northern Saskatchewan. That includes 34 in the Far North West Region; 14 in Far North East; 65 in North West; 45 in North Central, and 14 in North East.

Nearly 62,000 people in the province have recovered from COVID-19.

During a media conference Wednesday, Dr. Saqib Shahab said the province wouldn’t have Thanksgiving and perhaps Christmas and New Year’s at the rate cases are going.

There were 12,906 new cases reported in Saskatchewan in the month of September, nearly a fifth of the 67,339 cases recorded in the province since the pandemic started in March of 2020.

Of the 10 deaths announced Thursday, all were in the 80-and-over age group. Three of the individuals lived in the Saskatoon region, two lived in each of the northeast, central-east and Regina zones, and one was from the southwest.

Saskatchewan has reported at least one COVID-related death on 26 straight days and on 29 of the 30 days in September.

On the vaccine front, the province reported 4,792 doses of COVID vaccine administered, including 2,643 first doses and 2,149 second doses.

It’s the 13th straight day first doses have equalled or outnumbered second doses.

To date, more than 1.55 million shots have been given in the province and more than 734,000 people are considered fully vaccinated.

NITHA Data

As of Sept. 29, the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) reported 40 new cases of COVID-19.

Of those new cases, 68 per cent are unvaccinated, eight per cent are partially vaccinated and 25 per cent were fully vaccinated.

There are 257 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities with 18 people in hospital.
