Meadow Lake RCMP hosting free interpersonal violence information seminar

Oct 6, 2021 | 6:00 AM

The Meadow Lake RCMP is hosting a free workshop focused on providing information about interpersonal violence and the resources available in the community.

Residents of Meadow Lake and the surrounding area will have the opportunity to engage in several presentations discussing how these resources can help people experiencing interpersonal violence and to what extent these programs can be of assistance.

Community program officer Maryah Walker stated the intention of these programs is to provide residents with enough information so they will be better equipped to escape dangerous situations, support loved ones through adversity and take preventative measures that could save lives.

“It’s an opportunity for our RCMP detachments in Saskatchewan to come together in a workshop capacity and bring an understanding of what these programs and services are to the people that are already engaged with those impacted by familial violence,” she said.

Guests will be informed of these resources through several presentations outlining key details regarding each individual program.

The Claire’s Law session will explain what the policy can do, how the policy can be utilized and what steps can be taken to ensure any applications or measures will be effective.

Safety devices, including the Ora Panic Button Alarm and the SolusGuard, will be demonstrated with a tutorial on when these devices should be used and the item’s features.

Programs like the Northern Transportation Support Initiative and Victim’s Compensation Program will be clarified for people who know someone trying to escape from a dangerous situation and how they may be financially compensated in certain scenarios.

Presentations will also include information on assembling a safety plan and how to apply for a peace bond through their local resources.

Walker explained participants will be debriefed at the end of the day to try and capture where there are gaps in service delivery, if there is an overlap and how an infographic for the information can be created in the community to easily access programs and services available that aren’t necessarily common knowledge.

“It’s always important to bring that level of understanding and awareness to community members to be able to give them the tools they need to be safe in their homes and their communities,” said Walker.

“It’s a great opportunity for the RCMP to be able to host these sorts of events to help build on our partnerships, and continue to bring awareness to the programs and services we have to support communities.”

The workshop is scheduled to take place at the Meadow Lake Royal Canadian Legion on Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch will be provided to those in attendance.

Anyone interested in registering for this event can complete the process by contacting Walker via email at maryah.walker@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or by phone at 306-930-6464.
