Door of Hope, Grace United hosting community Thanksgiving meal

Oct 8, 2021 | 2:18 PM

The Door of Hope and Grace United Church are working together over Thanksgiving weekend to provide some residents with a holiday meal.

From noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday people are invited to join at the Door of Hope for a meal consisting of ham, perogies, vegetables and some baked goods for dessert.

Grace United’s Julie Raw said the meal is designed to not only help out people in the community who need assistance with food security, but also to bring together people in the community who may not have plans or have the ability to travel over the holiday.

“This is something we can do to promote community, and share love with people who maybe don’t have so much around in their lives,” she said.

“We just want to share with the community some of the things we have that maybe others don’t.”

She mentioned events like this rose from the church’s desire to find a way to reduce some of the issues in the community like poverty and housing.

Knowing those issues are monumental tasks, volunteers began looking for more manageable ways to combat these matters, leading to the creation of community holiday meals.

The Door of Hope’s Natanis Bundschuh explained this act of generosity comes at a time when the Door of Hope started experiencing difficulties hosting a Thanksgiving meal of its own.

She said having support on an initiative like this ensures the community doesn’t take another hit from the impact of COVID-19 on the community.

“We do a Thanksgiving meal on Friday if we can, but we didn’t have any turkeys come in this year,” Bundschuh said.

“Having the church step up enables us to be able to ensure that people have someplace to go, and they usually provide everything too which is another big help.”

As the Door of Hope is not a restaurant, proof of vaccination will not be required from those looking to participate.

Hand sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the venue, volunteers will ask that people wear masks when they’re not seated, and social distancing will be encouraged.
