Métis Nation—Saskatchewan hosting inaugural Métis Youth Council Presidential Election

Oct 12, 2021 | 5:40 PM

Métis Nation—Saskatchewan (MN-S) is preparing to host a new democratic process that could lead to many new implications for the government and community.

On Friday, MN-S will open up a nomination period for any Métis Nation residents between the ages of 16 and 29 that would be interested in running for office in the first ever Provincial Métis Youth Council (PMYC) Presidential Election.

In an interview with meadowlakeNOW, Chief Electoral Officer Gwen LaFond stated the PMYC President would be responsible for representing youth at Provincial Métis Council meetings.

She added the president would be expected to work with youth from all 12 MN–S regions to build membership and encourage participation.

“It’s a very exciting time for MN-S,” she said. “We’re excited to see the creation of this new position and how it moves forward within the government.”

“They represent the youth at the Provincial Métis Council advocating for youth, participating in all of the decisions and leading the delegation to the Métis Nation legislative assembly.”

To be an eligible candidate, the individual must also be a card-carrying citizen of the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan government.

MN–S president Glen McCallum spoke of the importance in bringing in a representative of the youth, saying they would be a valuable asset in decision making.

“Being engaged in the full democratic process will empower the next generation of young Métis leaders and will strengthen all of our government,” he said.

Nominations for the 2021 MN–S PMYC will open on Oct. 16 at 7 a.m. until Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.

Nomination forms are available at the MN-S election website. The forms can be filled out online, emailed to info@mnselection.ca or delivered to the chief electoral officer in Saskatoon during the nomination period.

Candidates are permitted to begin campaigning at any time. The voting process will be conducted online over a two-day period with polling opening up on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 a.m., running through Saturday, Nov. 6 until 7 p.m..
