City of Meadow Lake to auction first dog tag of 2022

Oct 14, 2021 | 6:13 PM

The City of Meadow Lake has reached an agreement with the bylaw department that will see the the first dog tag of 2022 be auctioned off throughout December, rather than a first come, first serve basis.

With the City requiring each dog living in the community to be licensed, officials recognized there are typically some people in the community that work to acquire the first dog tag of the year.

With the high interest in the tag, the bylaw department proposed a silent auction be held at City Hall throughout December with the proceeds going to the Meadow Lake & District Humane Society (MLDHS).

City Manager Diana Burton explained residents would line up at the City Hall doors before it would open to acquire the esteemed piece of registration, and having the silent auction would make the process more organized.

“With the advent of having brought on EFT payments in 2020, somebody transferred us a payment and then said that the number one dog tag was theirs because the payment went through prior to these people who lined up at the front door,” she shared.

“To avoid having to pick and choose who gets it and have people lined up in -40 C

Weather information is not currently available at this location.

While the City expects the bid would be posted each day throughout the month of December, there are more details being worked out ahead of the event.

The City will forgo the cost of the tag as it is said to be a minimal loss when compared to the annual revenue brought in by annual dog tag purchases. Tags run anywhere from $20 to $100, depending on the dog that is being registered.

Coun. Tom Harrison expressed his pleasure with the idea, speaking highly of the MLDHS work in the community.

“They do a lot of good work for dogs and it’s a win-win,” he said.

Advertising for the auction is expected to begin at some point in mid-November.

The final day of the auction is set for Dec. 31, 2021. A cheque and tag presentation would be conducted as soon as practical in the new year.
