Eight COVID-related deaths reported with 271 new cases, 85 in Northern Sask.

The province reported 271 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today.

Of the new cases, 207 were among unvaccinated individuals and 71 were in children between the ages of 0-11. Eight new deaths were also reported today bringing the provincial total to 793 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 have died.

The new cases in Northern Saskatchewan are located in the Far North West (nine), Far North East (11), North West (30), North Central (32), and North East (three).

There has been 74,940 cases confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic; 3,434 cases considered active and 70,713 cases considered recovered.

Over a quarter (28.4 per cent) of new cases are in the age category of 20 to 39.

More than one-quarter (27.0 per cent) of new cases eligible for vaccination (aged 12 years and older) were fully vaccinated.

As of October 19, a total of 335 individuals are hospitalized, including 252 inpatient hospitalizations and 83 ICU hospitalizations. Of the 335 patients, 251 (74.9 per cent) were not fully vaccinated. In addition, one ICU patient has been transferred to Ontario.

COVID-19 Summary for October 19, 2021:

There were 2,232 new cases of COVID-19 to report in Saskatchewan from October 13–19, bringing the provincial total to 74,940 cases. There were 3,186 recoveries recorded during the same period.

Forty new deaths were reported October 13–19.

From October 13–19, 23,495 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been given in Saskatchewan, bringing the total number of vaccines administered in the province to 1,627,570.

As of October 19, 84 per cent of those 12+ have received their first dose and 75 per cent of those 12+ are fully vaccinated.

Booster Program

Starting October 25, the COVID-19 vaccination booster program will be expanded. COVID-19 boosters will be administered at least six months after the second dose was received for the following groups:

• Individuals aged 65 years and older.
• Individuals living in the Far North and those living on First Nation communities, aged 50 years and older.
• Health care workers, who will be asked to present a copy of their license from their professional licensing body or a workplace pay stub at the point of immunization. Saskatchewan Health Authority staff will be required to present their staff identification.
• Individuals born in 2009 or earlier with underlying health conditions that are clinically extremely vulnerable including:
• People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• People with rare diseases that significantly increase the risk of infections, such as homozygous sickle cell disease
• People who had their spleen removed
• Adults with very significant developmental disabilities that increase risk, such as Down’s Syndrome
• Adults on dialysis or with chronic kidney disease (stage 5)
• Significant neuromuscular conditions requiring respiratory support

NITHA numbers

As of Oct. 18, there are eight new cases reported in NITHA communities; six (75 per cent) were unvaccinated, two (25 per cent) are partially vaccinated and 0 were fully vaccinated.

There are 218 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities.

These cases are located in the Far North Central (Athabasca), 0; Far North West, 43; Far North East, 121; North Central, 40; and North East, 14. There has been 6,342 cases (96 per cent) that have recovered, and 12 people are being hospitalized.

Eight new cases of COVID-19 were reported in NITHA communities on Oct. 18. As of that date there are 218 active cases of COVID-19 in the region. (NITHA.com)
