Turning Point Youth Centre hosting ‘Parents Only’ event

Oct 19, 2021 | 3:57 PM

The Turning Point Youth Centre (TPYC) is preparing to shake things up for a day with an upcoming parents-only event.

The day will create a better understanding of the program and demonstrate the impact it has on children in the community.

The November event at the TPYC will involve parents participating in the activities children engage in at the youth centre and show what a typical day looks like.

Executive director Belinda Martin said the interactive activities provide a first-hand experience of what the youth centre offers to their children.

“We thought it’d be fun for parents to come and spend a little bit of time here, or even for parents who kind of want to send their kids here, but don’t know enough about the place,” she said.

“[The staff] have a chance to meet the parents, and have [the parents] meet the people that their kids spend so much time with, or they might spend more time with if they end up sending their kid here.”

The event will begin with a brief seminar for parents on family-related topics before opening up the centre to the parents and allowing them to utilize the amenities featured at the centre. Snacks and refreshments will be supplied.

This would mark the first time the youth centre has hosted an event like this. Martin added one of the directors, Delton Sylvain, came up with the idea over a year ago, but the COVID-19 response temporarily prevented the event from materializing.

With restrictions starting to ease up in some areas, Martin said the youth centre opted to take advantage of the timing and welcome people in.

She added proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test would not be required to attend, but social distancing and sanitation measures will be in place as they would on any other occasion.

Youth who already attend the program will receive invitations to the event to bring home to their parents. Any parents considering sending their children to the program will also have the opportunity to attend the affair and see the centre for themselves.

The Parent’s Only Event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
