Onion Lake Cree Nation launches app improving band communication

Nov 16, 2021 | 3:16 PM

Onion Lake Cree Nation is implementing a new system designed to optimize communication between the band and members of the community.

A mobile app developed by Aivia Design & Technology utilizes the Communikit Platform, a system said to be highly-touted by Indigenous leaders. The app provides users with instant access to job opportunities, COVID-19 updates and public notices put out by the band.

This system also allows for these updates to become available immediately through push notifications, rather than being required to manually open the app or visit the Onion Lake Cree Nation website.

In a media release, Okimaw Henry Lewis spoke of the importance the app represents to the community, saying it would streamline communication and improve efficiency.

“Staying in touch with our membership and letting them know the programs, services, and events and activities going on in our community is vital to ensuring economic, ecological, and personal prosperity for our membership,” he stated.

“This app can be used as a tool to benefit our community in so many ways and we’re excited to see metrics on how the first few months go.”

The app is designed to make communication more accessible to members of the community, whether they are on the reserve or not. Up-to-date job postings and COVID-19 information can be found in the ‘Documents & Forms’ section on the home screen as well as in the ‘Notifications’ segment.

Currently, the app is still being reviewed, modified and tested by leadership to ensure the system is operating efficiently.

Band members can sign into the app using their personalized account once registration has been completed, or use the service through a temporary guest account.

The app is available on the Google Play Store and App Store free of charge.

meadowlakeNOW reached out to Onion Lake Cree Nation leadership for further comment on the new development, but did not receive a response at the time of publishing.
