Lloyd Ex finds new CPCA Finals sponsor, three-year agreement

The Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) and its year-end championship are staying in the Border City.

Lloydminster Nissan and the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association (LAEA or Lloyd Ex) reached a new three-year deal for LAEA’s Halstead Downs to continue hosting the CPCA Finals. Lloyd Ex also announced the dates for the 2022 CPCA Finals, which will take place August 17-21. General manager of Lloyd Ex Jackie Tomayer said they are very excited about the new partnership.

“We had four great years with Denham Chrysler, they were very good to us,” she said. “We have traditionally always had a truck sponsor, so we’re very excited to have Nissan on board.”

One of the biggest sporting events of the year in Lloydminster, the finals take place over five days, featuring music and other forms of entertainment in between the racing, ending with a final dash on the Sunday. Over 15,000 fans attend this event during a typical year.

Tomayer said getting this agreement on the books was important in order for staff to begin building up momentum for next summer. The finals are preceded by the CPCA’s summer long tour of racing events.

“These do take some time to get into place and we were happy to secure this deal before the end of the year to start branding this event as the new Lloydminster Nissan 2022 CPCA Finals,” Tomayer said.

There’s also an incentive to finalize these agreements given the effects of the pandemic. Tomayer noted that things are still uncertain for a lot of business owners in the prairies, with some doing well and others struggling, so she appreciates the support they’ve received.

“To secure sponsorship of this magnitude is encouraging for the event industry as a whole and our [local] economy,” she said.

After the cancellation of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 restrictions, the CPCA returned and fielded 32 drivers in 2021, with Meadow Lake’s Logan Gorst making a return of his own to win the CPCA Finals. Todd and Ryan Baptiste of Red Pheasant Cree Nation were among the contenders on the last day.
