The Meadow Lake Thrashers are keeping a hot start to the hockey season.

After claiming the top spot in their first tournament of the year, the Meadow Lake Thrashers followed up their victory with another impressive outing in the Turtleford tournament over the weekend, winning B-side gold.

The team made its way through the first two games, winning over Lloydminster 8-3 and dropping a close one to Shellbrook 7-5.

The Thrashers would later rally from the loss and capture the top spot once again, defeating the hometown Turtleford team 9-4 in the final game of the weekend.

Coach Morgan Gutek said the squad (featuring 10 boys and four girls) put up impressive performances in their games. He added a facet of their game stood out as a strength across the team.

“They pass the puck really well,” he said.

“The younger they grasp that, the better off they’ll be going forward. There was good gamesmanship, there was lots of fun, it’s good to be back in tournament action and seeing noticeable improvements.”

Results from the tournament will not count toward the team’s official record as it is an exhibition event.

Gutek said the tournament provided an opportunity for the young athletes to continue developing a crucial component of their skill set. He explained the team’s position play will remain a focus throughout the year and into their future years on the ice.

“We practice to get better in games, and we take what we learn in games to implement that into practices,” he said.

“Our outlook [on the season] remains the same. We’re going to continue to have fun, that’s the priority. Winning is a bonus.”

The Thrashers next game is scheduled for Dec. 18 against St. Walburg in Flying Dust Arena.
