Carpenter High women’s basketball claims silver at Humboldt tournament

The Carpenter High School senior women’s basketball team continues to build off of their early season success with a silver finish at the Humboldt basketball tournament.

The event is the second tournament of the girls season, which comes immediately after they earned a bronze finish in their first showing.

Speaking with meadowlakeNOW, Coach Kendra Paramchuk said the tourney showed signs of improvement in key areas from their first outing, but revealed some aspects of their game that require improvement as well.

“We’ve seen a variety of teams and had an opportunity to play everyone, and I think this gives us a chance to work on some skills on offence and defence,” she said.

“We became more aggressive, and we had more composure in our closer games. We need to work on how to play against and break down zone defence. We’re a big team and a lot of teams see that, and they’ve been playing zone to clog up the key.”

Carpenter paved their way to the silver prize by defeating the host team in their first matchup by a score of 46 – 40.

The game came down to the final minutes as it was an evenly contested affair for most of the match, but the Spartans were able to walk away with a win after a pair of made free throws late in the game.

The girls went on to face Warman in their second match to advance to the final, winning 43 – 25. Unfortunately for the Spartans, they would drop the final game to Melfort by a score of 50 – 33.

Throughout the game, the Spartans focused on keeping a pair of opposing players under a much tighter defensive assignment as Paramchuk highlighted the duo’s athletic abilities as one of the factors that could greatly affect the matchup.

Paramchuk explained while the half-court defensive strategy and some missed shots ultimately played a big role in the outcome, the experience against a tough foe in their category could be key to success later in the season.

“We’re really proud of the girls for defensively working hard and tackling that goal of keeping those players to minimum points,” she said.

“They are one of the top teams in 4A, so I think we’ve got a lot to build on, and it’ll be nice to play against them again with a new gameplan.”

The senior girls basketball team’s next tournament is scheduled to take place in Moose Jaw in January.
