Flying Dust First Nation hosting complimentary home maintenance workshop

Flying Dust First Nation is hosting a free home maintenance workshop in mid-February.

The complimentary program conducted by the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation provides those in attendance with important knowledge regarding regular maintenance checks as well as crucial measures in response to emergency situations that occur frequently at home.

In an interview with meadowlakeNOW, Housing Clerk Valerie Desjarlais explained the program is offered in the community to help residents conduct imperative preventative maintenance measures that can improve their well-being, save them money and help the community maintain their housing stock.

“Flying Dust is pretty proud of their housing stock. Our houses range from being the age [sic] of 1960, right up to 2019,” she said.

“We thought we’d bring [the program] back to our members again just to make sure they have that knowledge on hand.”

Attendees will learn the importance of changing air filters in their HVAC units, what steps to take to prevent further damage in a situation involving broken water lines or flooding and more.

“The main thing is we ask them is questions like, ‘what if there’s a water leak in your house? Do you know what to do?’ If the answer is no, then you need to come out to this workshop,” she commented.

This workshop comes at a time where the community is experiencing high volumes of housing request applications. While Desjarlais stated community leadership boasts a sufficient housing stock, she also mentioned the supply of homes is still not as plentiful as desired to meet the demand.

“Housing is a shortage in all our First Nation areas and within our community. We’re doing our best, and we hope that our tenants do their best also.”

She explained when a new tenant is welcomed into their home, workers take the tenant on a tour and demonstrate how to conduct regular maintenance and what items need to be cared for. The course offers an opportunity to refresh one’s memory and show new tenants what steps to take.

The program is scheduled to run from Feb. 16-17 at Flying Dust gym between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Daily door prizes and free lunch will be provided to those who attend.
