Several athletes from northwest Saskatchewan shone this weekend in Alberta College Athletics Association (ACAC) sporting events.

March post-season play is underway in multiple sports with several faces familiar to the Battlefords, Meadow Lake and other communities helping their teams advance to the Final Four. Here’s some of the highlights.

Basketball:

North Battleford’s own Riley Rathwell played a part in helping the Lakeland Rustlers men’s basketball team pull off an upset on the road. In a tight defensive contest against the Augustana Vikings, Rathwell had 10 points, four assists and three steals, a few of which were critical in the late stages of the 60-55 victory.

Another Rustler, Maidstone’s Alana Olson, helped the women’s basketball team remain undefeated and keep their quest for second-straight championship alive. The second year forward posted eight points, four rebounds and four assists in their 69-54 quarterfinal win. Lakeland will host the women’s Final Four tournament this weekend.

Volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team from Lloydminster was also victorious in their quarterfinal, sweeping the Keyano Huskies. MacKenzie Yole, who hails from Île-à-la-Crosse, will start in their semi-final match on Friday.

First year setter and Carpenter High School graduate Mason Gorski made impact in his first playoff match with the King’s Eagles. Facing off against Keyano, who feature Preston Yole from Île-à-la-Crosse, Gorski had 36 assists in his team’s 3-1 victory.

Hockey:

Former North Star and North Battleford Comp grad Owen Lamb was the hero for the Augustana Vikings on Saturday, with a shorthanded goal that proved to be the game winner. The Vikings advance to a semi-final series against top ranked Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Several other athletes, including other North Stars alumni, will be in action this weekend during Final Four play for volleyball, basketball and hockey.

Schedules for each competition, including start times and live stream links, are available on the ACAC website.
