Meadow Lake awaiting care home completion, arena grant application

Mar 21, 2022 | 5:05 PM

The City of Meadow Lake is looking forward to the completion of the NorthWest Community Lodge.

Mayor Merlin Seymour said they’re getting good news at City Hall on the facility’s progress. The long term care home for seniors replaces the Northland Pioneer Lodge, which has been in service since 1955.

“The old facility is towards the end of its life, pretty worn,” Seymour said. “Having the new facility is an absolute positive for the community.”

The lodge, announced four years ago, will provide more total beds, particularly at Level 4 extended care.

“They’re talking another six weeks, then some time to get all the IT stuff completed, hopefully by the end of May,” Seymour said. “They’ve been working on it for 18 months, a few delays with water and supply chain issues. But it’s getting closer.”

Meadow Lake Council are also waiting on the details related to insurance for the arena, which burned down last summer, as well as on the grant application for the multi-use facility to replace it.

“Insurance is still finalizing some items,” Seymour said. “And with grants, we’re patiently awaiting a response back.”

Seymour added that street clearing has remained an issue in the City, especially ahead of everything melting. He also commended the work of crews during this winter, which he and public works have noted was a particularly large amount of precipitation.

“They’ve been going hard right from November on the snow removal,” he said. “Hats off to them.”

“Hopefully there won’t be any big water issues.”

Byelection nearing

The City has put out advertising regarding the upcoming byelection to fill Meadow Lake’s vacant council seat. Scheduled for May 25, the election will appoint a replacement for Richard Levesque, who resigned in the fall.

Seymour noted there are a few requirements in order to run, including five signatures from members of the community.

“Please feel free to stop by City Hall if you’re interested in running and serving the City.”
