Police join fire crews for ice rescue training

The Meadow Lake Fire Department, along with some local RCMP officers, are keeping up to date on ice rescue procedures.

From March 11-12, the Fire Department hosted a two-day ice rescue course, starting with classroom and dry-land practice and followed on the ice for the second day. Two members of the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment were invited to attend, Cst. Kam Chaudhari and Cst. Becki Scott.

Fire Chief Neil Marsh said the crew was very pleased to have RCMP members join them for the course. While police are not generally directly involved in this type of rescue, Marsh said the exposure was very much appreciated and the members enjoyed partnering with their partner first responders in the community.

“In our area, the police are very often first on scene at emergency scenes,” he said. “By training together, police officers and firefighters will be better equipped to work together when called to respond to calls for rescue.”
