Rainy conditions hitting the Battlefords, Meadow Lake

May 17, 2022 | 5:19 PM

Northwest Saskatchewan is finally getting much needed rainfall.

The Battlefords, Lloydminster, Meadow Lake and other areas are seeing periods of light rain, which is expected to carry over through the evening. In total, Meadow Lake is expecting around 5-7 mm, while the Battlefords could get rainfall in the range of 5-10 mm.

Because of this moisture hitting the area, municipalities with fire bans in place will reassess. Earlier Monday, The RM of North Battleford officially lifted its fire ban that had been in place since late April.

Rainfall may stick around for a few days. The forecast in Meadow Lake has periods of rain throughout Wednesday and overnight, before things are partially clear on Thursday. In the Battlefords, there’s a smaller chance of precipitation during the day, but rain is expected to come overnight and into Thursday morning.

Temperatures are also cooling in the region. Both Meadow Lake and the Battlefords are expecting a low of 4 Celsius overnight, amidst showers and potential thunderstorm risks. On Wednesday, afternoon highs are expected to reach 14 C in the Battlefords and 12 C in Meadow Lake, both well below average for this time of year. Both areas are expected to remain cool for a couple days, with overnight lows on Thursday dipping into freezing temperatures at -1 C.

By the weekend, warm spring conditions make a return amid sunny skies. Afternoon highs on Saturday are forecast at around 15 C for most municipalities, rising to 19 C in the days that follow.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously while rainy conditions persist. Keep track of the status for major roadways at Highway Hotline.
