Highway construction begins in the Battlefords, Meadow Lake

May 20, 2022 | 4:07 PM

Motorists are going to have to get used to slowing down near the Battlefords and Meadow Lake.

The Government of Saskatchewan is undergoing capital projects that covers an investment of $453 million, including twinning Highway 3 and completing more than a few passing lanes on other highways. There’s also several paving projects beginning this weekend in the northwest.

The largest local project is paving on Highway 4, north of North Battleford. This will cover roughly 12 km of the road.

East of Meadow Lake on Highway 55, seal coating is underway. This is part of a $9.2 million project scheduled to take place from May 11–22 on various sections of highway in Saskatchewan.

There’s also improvements being made to roads that lead to provincial parks across the province. This includes work on Highway 26 to Meadow Lake Provincial Park and Highway 204 access to the Battlefords Provincial Park. In addition to the access improvements, paving will occur on roadways with the Battlefords and Meadow Lake parks as well.

The provincial government’s plan includes improving more than 1,100 km of highway this year, as part of a 10-year target of 10,000 km of highway road. Currently, work is slightly ahead of the required pace.

Bradshaw noted that with these large construction zones also comes parts where vehicles must slow down to 60 km/h.

“We want drivers to understand that traffic slowdowns are temporary, and they’ll soon have a better road to travel after construction is over,” Highway Minister Fred Bradshaw said in a release.

“The Ministry of Highways has hard-working crews all over the province,” he said, “we want to ensure each of them gets home safely every night.”

Anyone planning to travel can find weekly construction updates online, as well as road conditions and alerts via the Highway Hotline.
