A man accused of attacking a senior citizen, and then fleeing the scene with an axe, may be getting closer to facing trial.

A preliminary hearing date has now been set for 30-year-old Jordan Nelson.

On Nov. 22, a judge in Meadow Lake will hear the Crown’s evidence and decide whether it’s strong enough for the case to be committed for trial.

Nelson’s charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault with a weapon date back to March of last year.

Police were informed of an incident that occurred at a rural location in the Rural Municipality of Meadow Lake. Nelson had fled the scene and was said to be carrying an axe with him at the time.

Officers from several detachments spread across the community searching for the suspect and issued a SaskAlert advising the public not to approach the man or his vehicle. Within an hour, RCMP were able to locate the suspect and arrest him without incident.

The victim was 74 at the time of the assault. Police have indicated the accused and the victim were not strangers.
