Meadow Lake Sox rolling on four-game streak

Coming off a triumphant 2-0 showing on their doubleheader road swing Sunday, the Meadow Lake Sox now sit second overall in the North Sask River Baseball League standings, with an 8-4 record.

Winners of four straight overall, the Sox’s recent back-to-back wins came topping the defending champion Kindersley Stallions 10-3 in their first stop, and 2020 champion Lloydminster Twins 11-9 in their second.

It was a weekend pitcher and infielder with the Sox, Craig Weran who called a big one for the team.

“We’re really happy with how the weekend went as that’s a long day for us [Sunday], going down to Kindersley and then coming back and playing in Lloydminster, but we’re thrilled to have won both of those games,” he said.

The Sox’s success reflects a resiliency about the group Weran said can only help them come playoff time. After rattling off four straight wins to open the schedule, the team dropped their next four to fall back to .500 on the season through their first eight games.

However, rather than dwell on the rough stretch, the team has battled back with their current streak, and now sits primed for a shot at home-field advantage come the playoffs, with just one more game to go in the regular season.

Having outscored their opposition 39-12 over their current four-game stretch, perhaps it’s no surprise Weran credits an all-hands-on-deck performance – especially at the plate – with righting the ship for the team.

“If you look at the scores from these last few games our offence has really started coming along,” the veteran said. “I think there’s still a ways to go, but we’ve started to really score some runs and it’s nice to see the bats come alive. Our pitching has also continued to be strong, so both sides of the ball are looking pretty good right now.”

The Sox have one game remaining on their regular-season schedule prior to the playoffs, on the road against the Mervin Flyers Wednesday in Mervin. The full Sox schedule can be found here.
