Local track standout Avery Pearson earned more national hardware this weekend.

The Carpenter High School graduate took home gold at the 2022 Bell Canadian Track & Field Championships in Langley, BC. Pearson finished first in the Women’s U20 800-metre run with a time of 2:09:23, almost a full second ahead of the runner up.

This continues a memorable rookie season for the University of Saskatchewan runner. After several solid performances, including setting a record at the University of Alberta Open in the 600-metre run back in February, Pearson won four gold medals at the 2022 Canada West Championships in March. A few weeks later, she followed that with two silvers and a bronze at the U-Sports National Championships.

The accumulated total resulted in the freshman being named both Canada West and U-Sports Rookie of the Year.

While the time was golden, it didn’t meet Pearson’s personal best in the 800m, which she set at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. She is currently within the top 250 overall in the world.
