Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the Battlefords, Unity, Maidstone, St. Walburg and surrounding areas Friday afternoon, and at least one twister has been sighted in the area.

“Storm spotters have reported a tornado north of Paynton,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

The weather service also issued tornado watches Friday afternoon for Saskatoon and large areas of central Saskatchewan.

In addition to Saskatoon, tornado watches were put into effect for the areas around Humboldt, Martensville, Warman, and Rosthern.

Environment Canada also issued severe thunderstorm watches for other regions, including Regina, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn and Swift Current.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop in southern Saskatchewan and Montana late this afternoon/early this evening,” that advisory said. “These thunderstorms will last throughout the evening, and into the overnight hours.

“Golf ball size hail is expected along with strong gusty winds up to 100 km/h.”

Several tornadoes have touched down in Saskatchewan in recent weeks, including at least three in a single day near Foam Lake on June 29.

The latest weather alert information is available on Environment Canada’s website.
