Tight opening night of chuckwagon racing at NACC

Jul 9, 2022 | 3:30 PM

Despite the threat of bad weather, the North American Chuckwagon Championship (NACC) kicked off strong on Friday in Lloydminster.

In the second running of the event, which brings together drivers from both the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) and the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPAC), several tight heats ended with WPAC driver Wade Salmond winning Day Money. His time of 1:22.86 was just ahead of CPCA standouts like Luke Tournier, the 2021 Dash winner Logan Gorst and Jamie Laboucane.

Lloyd Ex General Manager Jackie Tomayer said it was a pretty smooth start, in spite of some rain locally and weather warnings in other regions.

“The weather looks great for the rest of the week and I’m not too worried. This track can handle quite a bit of rain.”

Marking the midpoint of the season for chuckwagon racing, the NACC serves as a companion to the annual Colonial Days Fair at the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association (Lloyd Ex). It’s also an alternative for drivers not competing at the Calgary Stampede.

Tomayer noted it was a relief to plan the event out as they would in a pre-pandemic year, adding they’re excited to have so much top-tier talent present for the event. Gorst is first in the CPCA standings, while Ray Croteau is leading the way in the WPAC.

“We were looking forward to having all the drivers that are here from both associations,” she said. “We have a good mix.

Laboucane said they enjoyed an opening event party prior to racing day, noting that families within the racing world are looking forward to the week, with the fair, music and other entertainment coming later in the week.

“It’s going to grow into a better and better event, so I’m excited for it,” I think it’s going to [top] last year.”

The first aggregate winner in the show’s history, Laboucane said he’s feeling good about the start on Friday.

“I train hard with my running and feeding program and the horses pay me back at tracks like this. I’ve never won a dash here, but I’ve locked a lot of day money and aggregate titles here, so I’m looking forward to taking that next step.”

Day 2 kicks off at 6:30 p.m., with more Streaming info available at the CPCA website
