Meadow Lake Sox kick off NSRBL playoffs against Standard Hill

Night one of the North Sask River Baseball League (NSRBL) playoffs kicks off tonight (Monday) in Meadow Lake, with a sole game on the senior baseball schedule.

The #4 Meadow Lake Sox open their quarterfinals series with the #5 Standard Hill Lakers in a matchup featuring two of the hottest teams in the league heading into the postseason.

The Sox (9-4) enter the playoffs playing some of their best ball this of the year, having ended the regular season on a white-hot five-game winning streak, outscoring their opposition 55-15 in the process.

Standard Hill meanwhile, has won five of their last six, with an 11-4 loss to Macklin in their final game of the season serving as the lone blemish on their current stretch dating back to June 14.

Veteran pitcher and infielder with the Sox, Craig Weran said the team is looking forward to getting back on the field tonight, for their first game of the postseason.

“The start of the playoffs is always exciting, and we’re hoping to pick up right where we left off with the regular season, as we’re looking forward to Game 1 tonight,” Weran said. “We’re excited to get it started.”

The teams split their season series during the regular season, as the Sox won their home opener on May 24 against Standard Hill, 10-8, while the Lakers answered with a 3-1 win of their own on their home diamond just under three weeks ago, in the teams’ June 21 meeting.

Weran said the series will come down to pitching – or perhaps who can get the timely hits against a pair of the league’s top rotations on the mound.

“They’ve got some really good young players and some good pitching, and we expect the pitching to be dominant in this series on both sides,” Weran said. “They’ve got two really good young arms, we’ve got two or three really good arms ourselves, and we think it’s going to be a series that’s fuelled by pitching on both sides.”

Featuring no shortage of star power, the Sox are led by the dynamic duo of Esau brothers, Dylan and Brett, who Monday it was announced swept the league’s year-end awards.

Dylan Esau took home Top Pitcher and League MVP honours, after leading the NSRBL with an ERA of 1.00 and a WHIP of .86, while striking out 23 batters in 21 innings of work. Brett Esau was named Top Batter after registering a league-best 22 runs, 24 RBI and five home runs.

Standard Hill counter with the runner-up for both Top Batter and League MVP, Masen Anderson. Anderson tied the elder Esau for a league-best five homers despite playing just eight games, while also batting .583, good for second amongst all at the plate.

Tonight’s game will be played at Meadow Lake’s Assman Field, with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
