Environment Canada issues extreme cold warning for Battlefords, Meadow Lake, Prince Albert

Dec 1, 2022 | 4:20 PM

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning for much of the central part of Saskatchewan and parts of the extreme north.

The warning stretches from Meadow Lake south to the Kindersley area. It goes from the Alberta border east to Prince Albert. It also includes Saskatoon and surrounding communities. A large part of the north, including Wollaston Lake and Fond-du-Lac, are under an extreme cold warning too.

The latest weather information can be found on Environment Canada’s website.

Environment Canada says wind chill values will be near -40 celsius Thursday night. The chill values will be a little better Friday during the day but are forecast to return Friday night.

In the warning released by Environment Canada, they offer some advice.

  • Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.
  • Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
  • If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
  • Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming.
  • Keep moving to maintain your body heat and seek shelter from the wind.

Extreme cold conditions that we’re expected to have over the next day or two can create the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.
