Meadow Lake auctioning off first dog tag for 2023

Dec 6, 2022 | 4:09 PM

Does your canine have what it takes to be number one? The good news is, you can buy the honour.

The city of Meadow Lake is auctioning off the rights to purchase the number one or first dog tag for 2023. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Meadow Lake and District Humane Society (MLDHS).

Community Safety Officer Joe Hallahan noticed that people would line up on the first business day of the year every year to get the number one dog tag. That’s how the idea of auctioning off the number one tag came to fruition.

For 2022, they decided to auction off the purchasing rights to the first tag and donate the money to the MLDHS. The auction raised $320.

The auction is open to anyone whose dog resides in Meadow Lake. Bids can be submitted through the City of Meadow Lake website. Bids must be in increments of at least $5, and bidding will close at noon on Friday, Dec. 30. As of the time this article was posted, the highest bid was $60.

The winner will be announced on Jan. 4, 2023. Hallahan said the auction offers a little bit of fun along with raising money. Registering a dog in the City of Meadow Lake is mandatory.

The city will use their Voyent Alert system to send out the current bid amount every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by 4:30 p.m. As part of the alert, they include a biography of a dog currently available for adoption at the MLDHS.
