Freezing rain, ice pellets in the forecast for multiple Sask. communities

You may want to avoid driving on the highways this upcoming weekend.

According to Environment Canada, there’s a chance of freezing rain and ice pellets early this Saturday for multiple communities. They include Prince Albert, North Battleford, Meadow Lake, Melfort, and Saskatoon.

The southern part of the province, specifically Regina, is expected to get hit by freezing rain later in the day Saturday.

Staying Safe

Lyle Karasiuk, director of Public Affairs for Parkland Ambulance, explained to paNOW they usually deal with quite a few vehicle accidents when freezing rain makes an appearance.

For those who have to travel to another community, it’s recommended they double-check road conditions on the Highway Hotline before leaving.

If your vehicle does lose traction and slips into a ditch, don’t leave your vehicle.

“Stay with your vehicle, call for help, and help will be there as quickly as they can,” said Karasiuk.

He added it’s not unusual for paramedics to have to help someone who’s been injured after slipping while walking outside.

If you come across a spot that isn’t salted or sanded, Karasiuk said the best way to ensure you don’t fall and potentially injure yourself is to bring out your inner penguin, so to speak.

“Instead of walking your normal stride kind of do a little bit of a shuffle, that’ll keep you upright and hopefully prevent you from slipping.”

If your community does get hit by freezing rain and ice pellets, you’re asked to salt or sand your driveway and walkway. This will limit the chances of yourself getting hurt or someone else like paramedics who may have to respond to a call. If you don’t have salt or sand, Karasiuk noted cat litter works just as well.
