Five charged with break and enter, flight from police in Loon Lake area incident

Five accused are facing charges that include break and enter and flight from police related to an incident in the Loon Lake area involving firearms.

Loon Lake RCMP received a report of armed individuals outside a home on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation at about 11:10 p.m. on May 17. After investigating, they determined the suspects got into a vehicle and were last seen driving northbound on Hwy. 26.

Pierceland RCMP began patrols to find the vehicle as it entered their detachment area. Officers located it, activated their emergency lights, and attempted a traffic stop. When the vehicle failed to stop, police continued to patrol the area to try to find it.

At about 12:45 a.m. on May 18, Pierceland RCMP received a report of suspicious persons at a home on Big Island Lake Cree Territory. Officers immediately responded, and observed the suspects’ vehicle outside the home. Five people were arrested without incident. After investigating, police seized two illegally-modified loaded firearms, bear spray and ammunition.

Meadow Lake RCMP, Loon Lake RCMP and the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Meadow Lake Crime Reduction Team assisted with the investigation.

As a result, five people are facing charges in the incident.

Gloria Cardinal, 34, Cameron Lawrence, 20, and Robert Plouffe, 27, all from Edmonton; Kashtin Sandfly, 23, from Mudie Lake; and Matthew Stanley, 30, from Athabasca, Alberta, are each charged with break and enter; flight from a peace officer; dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; possession of a firearm and prohibited weapon inside a vehicle; possession of a prohibited weapon without a valid licence; and possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.

They are also charged with various breaches of court-ordered conditions offences.

The accused individuals were scheduled to appear in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on May 23.
