#2 Meadow Lake Sox vs. #7 Mervin Flyers

#4 Unity Cardinals vs. #5 Lloydminster Twins

The opening round of the playoffs will begin Monday with each series being a best-of-three.

Meadow Lake Sox (2) vs. Mervin Flyers (7)

The Sox finished the regular season second overall with a 9-3 record, which included winning three of its last four games by a combined 35-11 margin.

“We had a pretty decent finish to the season here and have played some pretty good ball the last couple of weeks,” veteran pitcher and infielder with the Sox, Craig Weran said, adding that the youth contingent has been a big part of the team’s success.

“We’re just getting a lot of contributions from a lot of our young guys,” he said. “We had five 15 to 17-year-olds play last night and we’re just getting great contributions from all of these kids. We’ve got legs in the outfield, kids that can steal bases, and those that can hit the ball, so it’s been fantastic for us.”

Meadow Lake won each of their two games against Mervin (1-11) this year, 16-3 back on June 5, and 15-1 on June 26. Game 1 of the series will be played in Meadow Lake Monday, June 10, with the first pitch at Assman Field at 6:30 p.m.

North Battleford Beavers (3) vs. Glaslyn Orioles (6)

The Beavers also finished the regular season red-hot, with just a single loss over their last eight.

Player and manager with the Beavers, Kyle Gregoire said after a bit of a tough start to the year that saw the team open their schedule 1-2-1 over their first four, the team really banded together to find their footing, hitting their stride since.

“I think we definitely ended on a high note there,” Gregoire said. “We probably had a little bit of a sloppy start earlier in the season, but overall we’ve played really strong [as the season’s gone along]. It’s been a really great start for us down the stretch and we’re really excited to get into the playoffs now.”

The Beavers also won both of its games against the Orioles (2-10) this season, with an 11-1 victory back on June 9, and an 18-4 triumph on July 4.

The first game between the Beavers and Orioles will be Tues., July 11 at 7:30 p.m. at North Battleford’s Beaver Lions Stadium.

Unity Cardinals (4) vs. Lloydminster Twins (5)

The final matchup of the opening round will feature the four-five matchup between the Unity Cardinals (6-5-1) and Lloyd Twins (4-8).

Pitcher, occasional outfielder and team manager with the Cardinals, Cory Wildeman said having won four of their last five games, the Cards have brought their best at just the right time.

“I think we’re definitely coming into our own during the most important time of the season,” he said. “Lots of guys have gotten 20 to 25 at-bats under their belt and guys are finally starting to gel. I think we’re looking good heading into the playoffs.”

The Cardinals won both of the games of the regular season series, 7-3 on June 15, and 11-5 on June 28. Game 1 between the Cardinals and Twins will be played Tuesday night in Unity at 6:30 p.m.
